The Big Four Theory…

Been busy this past few days, so much so that I forgot to keep with my plan of posting a new blogpost every 3 days. Really swarmed with studies and hobbies that I have little time left to post. Nevertheless, I shall you write a long one this time.

As the title of the post suggests, A 4-horse race is synonymous with any competition that has 4 teams or individuals who has dominated that sports or field for so long that other competitors might as well just surrender the ambitions to be a Champion. There are a few sports with this agenda that clearly seen. I shall name these few but before that let me explain to you why this so called 4-horse race is actually a balancing factor in keeping the competition more exciting and actually helps in promoting the sports. 1) One reason is that by letting the top 4 team get as stronger than the other competitors, this will help boost the top 4 teams revenue and prestige amongst the field. This in turns will help bring and attract more exciting players into the team and making the league more exciting. 2) Another reason by having this 4-top teams stay top, it actually will balance the remaining competitors in the league. Imagine having half of the league vying for the top spot and in the end the winner won the competition by a mere single point. That would bring injustice to the most consistent team who let’s say has never lost a game but has gotten a lot of draws.  So actually by having a top-4 team can be beneficial to a sport. Here some example:

  • English Premier League –  top 4 teams, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. These 4 have been at the top ever since the beginning of the century and it certainly helped these 4 to get the best players and help win trophies.
  • Formula One – Ferrari,  McLaren, Renault, Mercedez. Used to be just a top 2 horse race but recently with rise of Renault and rebranded Brawn GP(Mercedez now), the formula races has gotten more exciting. I can’t even say there is bottom-4 horse race going on as well with Lotus, Virgin, HRT and ToroRosso fighting it out.
  • Tennis – Federer, Nadal, Murray, Roddick. These 4 have lighten up and conquered the tennis circuit for quite sometime now. And the championship has changed hands between these 4 a few times. And it certainly hasn’t dampened the excitement at all.
  • TechWorld – Google, Microsoft, Apple, Palm(A subsidary of HP). Yes even in the corporate world, these 4 big companies have dominated the industry for years now. Even though they may dominate, but they still churn out new technologies and improvement in various fields of expertise they have. Its really interesting to see such improvements and competition between these four.

2010 Singapore Grand Prix

image

24th-26th September 2010 will play host to one of the most exciting and memorable formulas race in the modern era, The Marina Bay circuit – Singapore Grand Prix.

The picture you see was taken at the circuit itself a month before the race. This will be 3rd edition of the street circuit being held here and hopefully more years to come. The difference between the circuit here and elsewhere is that here its a NightRace so it makes t more exciting as you can really see the Singapore city skyline in the backdrop eventhough the drivers will propably have no time to look into the surroundings during the race.

This year I’m hoping to catch it life but it depends so lets see how the things go…

Remember those CS hacking days…

CS or Counterstrike, a popular FPS games by Half-life creators. Yes. Team Fortress, Ricochet and Day of Defeat, all excellent mods by Half-life but it was Counter-Strike that brought Steam/Half-life to prominence and fame. Remember, those teenage years, slugging away on a PC for hours trying to get countless headshot or mastering the “Bunny hop”. Yup, I was a hardcore and semi-pro gamer back then but over the years, my gaming mojo has slowly waned. :(. Sad but true.

Nevertheless, I chance upon this nice vid showing the Aimbot(a cheat code/tool used by gamers to get instant headshot). Yes, the hacking in Counterstrike or the desperate measures taken by some gamers was scary until one needs to resort to bots to help you shoot down an opponent. Might as well let the bot play for ya. Really hated those hackers back then.

Well,  just a credit to the maker of the video for making excellent gun-slinging video effects, check out his youtube channel for more of such videos. Now, enjoy the action.

Yeah, just a side note, my CS nickname was> ALLAbamba 🙂

How the internet works…

Android is SKYNET…

We as human are at a very advance and interesting but precocious times. You see, we are hastily moving into digital revolution with advancement in mobile technology. Just a decade ago, no one could phantom the possibility of having a face-to-face chat with someone on the other side of the world, right in the palm of your hands. During those days, you propably had to dedicate a whole room of servers and computers just to run a dedicated network to speak and see the other person. But times have change and now with a simple click on your handphone, you can now not just hear but also see the other party.

Martin Cooper, the man who invented and pioneered the mobile phones or handphones is an Android adopter himself but also may due to the fact he once worked with Motorola.  He revolutionised the phone industry in the 1970’s, and a now 3 decades later, phones are now basically a mobile version of your computers. It’s truly amazing to see such wonderful advancement for the benefit of us.

But there is a silver lining in all of these technology bullet trains. You see it was the revolution of the smartphones that brought these fast-changing times.  For a decade in the 90s, computer technology seemed to be stagnant after Microsoft completely monopolise the PC world. This event would be mirrored if Apple had total dominance of the smartphone industry. Dominating an industry is indeed very profitable to a company but its a disease to technology. Luckily for us, the smartphone world had a competitor in Google’s Android and also RIM’s Blackberry.

Now, what makes this interesting is that with Apple choosing a closed-platform system path, Google on the other hand is going open-platform. This scenario ironically also mirrored the 1980s, Apple vs Microsoft OS wars. And looked who won. I’m not saying Apple will lose the war, but I’m theoretically deducing that having openness is the way to go. Just look at the phelora of devices with Android OS in it. Smartphones, Tablets, MIDI, MP3 Players, Netbooks, Car Navi Systems and even a fridge. The implementation of Android is limitless.

This also brings an important point in my discussion.A military defence contractor, Raytheon recently decided to implement Android as part of their defence management systems. So Is Android, SKYNET?? Yes, Skynet, the operating system or intelligent OS shown in Terminator Movies.

Now, I will let you ponder and decide for yourself…
